Program Description:
The Karamu House, the nation’s oldest producing Black theatre, has been undergoing major renovations and expansions to its historical landmark campus. The project began in 2017, with the final fourth phase, an education wing containing classrooms and offices, slated to open in late 2025. Phase III included major renovations to the theater and lobby space, dressing rooms, and the outdoor stage, ADA enhancements, a facelift to the streetscape, and the addition of a full-service bistro. The $4 million dollar renovation phase was completed in 2024.
The panelists will discuss how day-to-day project management played a role in the success of the multi-phase renovation project. Key points include methods for transferring information from PM to Senior PMs, the opportunities and challenges involved in renovating a historical landmark site, and preservation and celebration of African American arts and community through thoughtful design.
